pants on fire

Ovid's epic Roman poem, THE METAMORPHOSES, was written around the time of the birth of Christ. It is a collection of love stories, in 15 books, that all share the theme of human beings transformed into new bodies — trees, rocks, animals, magical creatures, flowers and constelations. They explain the origins of humankind and illustrate man's inextricable link with nature and the Universe.

These fantastical tales were once the basis of a religion on which civilization was built. We might dismiss them now as romatically preposterous, yet the myths that lead Ovid to the conclusion that everthing in the Universe is made of the same' stuff', and simply changes from one form to another, draws an extraordinary parallel to modern scientific theories of the creation of the universe and the evolution of man.
